A vintage birdcage veil
circa 1960 (NFS) |
|
Birdcage wedding veils are
unique in many ways, from the French veiling used in their construction to
the variety of looks achieved simply by wearing the same veil in different
ways. Perhaps the most unique aspect of these veils is the way they are
able to blend seamlessly in so many different wedding looks, including
simple beach weddings, elegant vintage weddings, and relaxed country
weddings with a Southern flair. French veiling goes by a variety of other
names, such as Russian netting, Russian tulle, English net, and Madonna
veiling. To make matters more confusing, birdcage veils also have several
other names including cage veils, blusher veils, and madonna veils. The
manufacture of this style of netting dates back to the early 19th century
in Europe when it was used as an embellishment on women's' hats. Its
distinctive diamond pattern has carried its popularity straight through to
the 21st century to its new use in wedding veils. Many people first saw
the birdcage veil in the movie Sweet Home Alabama, in which Reese
Witherspoon's character wore one, or more recently in Fantastic Four:
Rise of the Silver Surfer, worn by Jessica Alba. |
We offer five basic styles of birdcage veils,
the petite Elizabeth veil, the 9" blusher
Marilyn veil, the 18" full coverage
Audrey veil, the bandeau Grace veil
and the Ava veil.
They are all unique designs and are not available anywhere else. The 9" & 18" refers to the
width of the netting used from edge to edge. A 9" veil will be just
that--9" of netting from the comb to the edge of the veil. This style
works well for a bride that wants minimal coverage of her hair and face,
and looks best when it's placed on the top of her head or on the side. The
18" size is better suited for a bride that requires more coverage of her
face and hair. The full 18" size will attach near the base of her head or
slightly above, depending on how much hair will be under the veil. The 18"
size can also be customized to any size between 10-17" for no additional
charge.

This is only representative of the netting
we use, and exact style and scale may vary slightly depending on our
current stock.

Unfortunately, French netting comes in a limited number of colors.
Something Bold offers almost all of the birdcage styles in ivory, white and black,
and we may be able to create a custom veil in other colors as well by request.
Our recommendation is to only pair a white veil with a gown that is also a
true white. Any other off-white gown color (including natural silks, diamond white
and champagne) will look best with an ivory
veil. The netting of a birdcage veil is never in direct contact with the
gown when you have both on at the same time, unlike traditional veils, so
a small variation between the colors is not noticeable.
Still unsure about the color? We can send you a sample of both the white &
ivory netting for just $1.00 (standard shipping rates do not apply to
this, and it is available to US address only.) Just click the icon below to pay through the secure Paypal shopping

Q. Why are your prices so affordable? I've seen birdcage veils for
hundreds of dollars elsewhere.
A. Something Bold uses the same high quality veiling many
other birdcage designers use. Every veil is made carefully, one at a time
by hand according to our original designs. We just believe in offering a
fair price on well-made veils--why should you have to pay more?
Q. I plan on wearing my hair down for the wedding, or I have very short
hair. Will any of the veils
stay in my hair?
A. The Grace bandeau veil uses two very strong
hairclips that will stay in place in any hair type, even very short hair
or hair that is worn down. The Elizabeth veil
is another good option, since it has no attached haircomb and needs only a
few hairpins to stay in place. The Marilyn & Audrey veils are also
available with this clip as an option.
Q. Can you add an embellishment to my veil, such as feathers?
A. Something Bold now offers many popular embellishments to go with your
birdcage veil! Check out the veil jewelry &
accessories page.
Q. Why don't you accept returns?
A. Unfortunately, if we accepted returns, there would be the chance of a
bride wearing the veil on her wedding day and then returning it for a
refund. No one would want to buy what is essentially a used veil, so we
would not be able to resell these returned veils; however, we can accept
exchanges based on some conditions (see
Ordering Info.) We are more than happy
to answer any questions you may have to ensure you chose the right veil
for you. This policy is fairly standard among online veil retailers.
Q. I've read that a birdcage veil needs to be tailored specifically for me
by a local seamstress. Is this correct?
A. There's nothing wrong with having a veil made just for you by a local
seamstress, but keep in mind that you will be charged a premium for this
service if you can even find someone in your area that can do this. The
size & shape of an adult's head does not vary that much from person to
person, and our veils are made to fit just about everyone. You may be
paying much more for a custom veil that fits just as well as one of ours.
Q. Do you have a retail location?
A. Sorry, at this time we are only web-based. |
